Despite winning their first Scudetto since 2010, the Nerazzurri suffered a really terrible financial hit during the 2020/21 season.

The 2020/21 season was certainly one to be celebrated by Inter fans worldwide, as it marked the first time the Nerazzurri had won the Scudetto since 2010.

However, despite it being a very successful year, the cracks quickly began to show. Over the summer, Inter had to part ways with two men who were very crucial in their Scudetto triumph: head coach Antonio Conte and star striker Romelu Lukaku. The former reportedly left following disputes with Inter's board regarding transfers and allocating funds towards that, while the latter returned to Chelsea as the cash-strapped club needed to raise money quickly.

COVID-19, of course, did its part, as stadiums all over Italy were closed down. And even when they did re-open, it wasn't at full capacity, meaning that matchday income was drastically reduced.

Sponsorship contracts were also reduced as companies themselves were facing their own financial crunch and in addition, Inter were not able to prove they'd be as strong an investment as they would have wanted.

Indeed, Inter's financial woes have been no secret. In May, the Nerazzurri linked up with an American investment firm as they were seeking an emergency influx of new capital. California-based financial services company Oaktree Capital then secured an agreement with the struggling Italian giants, agreeing to loan them about €275 million ($318 million) in exchange for shares in the club, plus a seat on Inter's board, among other benefits.

That came on the heels of posting losses of about €102.4 million ($118.7 million) during the 2019/2020 season, but if fans thought that was bad, they will be really uncomfortable with these new numbers.

According to new reports, Inter ended up losing a whopping €245.6 million ($284.6 million) over the course of the 2020/2021 campaign. That's now the largest ever loss for a club in Serie A history, topping the eye-popping €210 million ($243 million) loss posted by Juventus in September.
