Gladbach earned their first win in the Europa League on Match-day Three against Marseille. The two teams will square off again in France.
Gladbach won 2-0 in Germany when the two sides met. Joey Barton felt that the score-line flattered the opponents. The win didn’t come easily for Gladbach. Their experienced captain Filip Daems converted a penalty for the first goal. That penalty was his twelfth. He has been successful in each and every one of his twelve attempts.

In the second half, a superb strike from Germany Under-21 international, Peniel Mlapa put the game to bed. The goal was easy on the eye; it was the kind of goal that Mönchengladbach fans will watch time and time again. Gladbach’s league form has also picked up following a slow start to the season.

Marseille is currently a serious contender for the Ligue 1 crown. They sit in fourth spot with 22 points after ten games. They started the season well but haven’t managed to uphold their form. Two defeats have come recently. They were battered by Valencienne. They followed that result up with a draw against PSG.

They lost to Troyes by a solitary goal as well but finally returned to winning ways last weekend. The Ayew brothers handed Marseille the away win over Ajaccio. Andre Ayew scored in the 55th minute. Jordan Ayew added a second in the 87th minute to seal the victory.

Gladbach meanwhile drew 1-1 against Freiburg. Igor De Camargo scored early on in the second half but saw his goal cancelled out by a late penalty from Daniel Caligiuri. Gladbach sits in eleventh spot in the Bundesliga with 13 points after ten games.

Gladbach and Marseille are tied on points in their group in the Europa League. They both have four points after three matches. Gladbach is third by virtue of an inferior goal difference. They needed the experience of their ‘old boys’ against Marseille two weeks ago. Filip Daems had the following to say about his club:

“Of course you need talented young players but you also need experience.” He is obviously an extremely experience player. The likes of Thorben Marx and Martin Stranzl have been around for a long time as well. They are helping the new players settle in following the departures of Marco Reus, Roman Neustadter and Dante Bonfim.

He also said the following:

“We have a lot of gifted young players and it’s really good for them to be able to play in the Europa League and get this experience.”

Gladbach is learning that while their youth can produce brilliance, the job cannot be done without their experienced campaigners. However, they haven’t found consistency just yet and will have to work hard to earn anything at all in France.

Prediction: Marseille 1-2 Gladbach
