On Sunday league leaders Paris Saint Germain will welcome third placed Marseille in a much awaited Le Classique. The oil rich side have made a massive investment in buying top quality players from around the globe and will be hoping to finally secure the Ligue 1 title this season.
PSG have made major leaps forward after being purchased by the Qatar Investment Authority, with the group promising of building a side capable of competing with the biggest clubs in Europe. They have managed to succeed to some extent and currently hold an advantage over Spanish side Valencia ahead of the second leg of the Round of 32. Even with the quality in their side PSG might just fall short of having the required potential to win the Champions League. They however have a very strong chance of being crowned French Champions by the end of the season and if they fail to win the title, it will be a major disappointment and surely a step back.

Sunday’s tie could very well change the course of the title race this season. If PSG lose to Les Phocéens, the title race will be wide open and PSG fans who have been waiting for a Ligue 1 title for the last 19 years might have to wait a little bit longer. But if PSG manage to win they will be eight points clear of Marseille and will maintain a distance between themselves and Lyon, who are desperately waiting for PSG to lose points.

It is important that the club hierarchy, the players and the fans do not get ahead of themselves and PSG is allowed to make a step by step progress. Now maybe too early to demand a European title from the French side, it is important to realize that PSG have made remarkable progress in the last three years. It can be said that much of their success has been due to money, but if you compare them with other big spenders like Manchester City, PSG’s record has been better in the last two seasons than the English side in Europe. PSG’s success has rather been down to excellent decisions, one of which was the capture of a well reputable and a successful manager Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian has put his money on the right players and all his signings have been critical in PSG’s success, especially Swedish star Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The big Swede has managed to justify his star status and tops the league scoring charts with 21 goals, nine goals ahead of AS Saint-Etienne’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

After a disappointing loss to Sochaux last Sunday, PSG have to pick themselves up since they cannot afford any more slip ups in the title race. For now it is important that PSG give more importance to domestic titles rather than the European crown. Winning the Ligue 1 title will surely give them a lot of confidence and provide a stepping stone to achieve greater things in the coming seasons.
