WTW CAF third round 2022 WC qualifiers

How to catch Senegal-Egypt, Nigeria-Ghana, Algeria-Cameroon and in 2022 World Cup qualifying action

March 28, 2022 By Michelle Bonsu
It's part two of the double-header featuring ten African nations, with five World Cup spots at stake.

Last week saw the first leg of CAF World Cup qualifiers. Ten teams remain as the qualification process is now in the third round, with five spots available for this year's World Cup. All the matches finished as closely contested affairs, with only one game featuring more than one goal scored.

Will things open up this time around for fans to see more goals? Or will all the teams involved, knowing what's on the line, play another cautious match?

Here's all you need to know.

Senegal vs Egypt - kick off at 10:00 PST/13:00 EST/18:00 BST/19:00 CET

What happened in the first leg: Egypt got a modicum of revenge on Senegal for their loss in this January's AFCON final - albeit the Pharaohs actually were the beneficiaries of an unfortunate own goal. That incident ultimately decided the first leg, meaning that the Lions of Teranga are still very much in it, and all eyes will be on Liverpool stars Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane to see if either will be able to help fire his side to the upcoming World Cup.

How Senegal or Egypt could qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup: For Egypt - the objective is simple - they can't lose. If the current result holds, the Pharaohs will be heading to the World Cup. Meanwhile, Senegal will need to win this match, and will hope that playing at home will give them the advantage they need.

Senegal team news: Abdou Diallo, Seny Dieng, and Alfred Gomis are all set to miss out due to injuries.

Egypt team news: Both Ramadan Sobhi and Mohamed Hany have had to leave the team due to injuries, while both Ahmed Hegazi and Akram Tawfik remain out following their injuries during the January AFCON tournament. In addition, Mohamed Abdelmonem will need to be monitored closely after he was subbed off last week due to a suspected concussion.

Nigeria vs Ghana - kick off at 10:00 PST/13:00 EST/18:00 BST/19:00 CET

What happened in the first leg: The West African derby ended up finishing all square, but arguably, Ghana will be bitterly disappointed they weren't able to do better as the Black Stars have now failed to win their last five home games against all competitions. This means that the upcoming second leg set to be played in Nigeria is that much more crucial for both the Super Eagles and the Black Stars.

How Nigeria or Ghana could qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup: Simply put, given the first leg finished as a scoreless draw, either Nigeria or Ghana will need to win this game. A simple 1-0 victory would suffice, although fans will hope to see at least a few goals at the two Western African sides prepare to square off on Tuesday.

Nigeria team news: No notable injuries, illness, or suspensions for the hosts.

Ghana team news: Andre Ayew missed last match due to a ban, but he'll be back in the squad for this game. Meanwhile, his brother Jordan will also be involved here after overcoming COVID-19.

Algeria vs Cameroon - kick off at 12:30 PST/15:30 EST/20:30 BST/21:30 CET

What happened in the first leg: Algeria hold a slim lead thanks to a solitary goal from Islam Slimani. The Desert Foxes will be eager to redeem themselves after a poor showing at the recent AFCON tournament, when the then-defending champions made a rather embarrassing early exit. Still, Cameroon are very much in it, and this game could prove to be a very interesting tactical contest.

How Algeria or Cameroon could qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup: As things stand, Algeria are en route to the World Cup thanks to their 1-0 win from the first leg. Of course, Cameroon are still very much in this contest, but obviously will need to grab at least two goals to progress - which could be much easier said than done given that Algeria haven't lost at home in nearly three years.

Algeria team news: No notable injuries, illness, or suspensions for the hosts.

Cameroon team news: Star striker Vincent Aboubakar should shake off an injury to come back here. Meanwhile, Zambo Anguissa remains out, which comes as a big blow for his side in this must-win match.

Morocco vs DR Congo  - kick off at 12:30 PST/15:30 EST/20:30 BST/21:30 CET

What happened in the first leg: A one-all draw means that everything is on the line as Morocco and DR Congo meet up for part two of their two-legged clash. This also was the only game in which more than one goal was scored, and

How Morocco or DR Congo could qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup: Morocco will certainly be hoping that their formidable home record will help them punch their ticket to this year's big event. Right now, they do hold an advantage thanks to having scored on the road, so if this result holds - and the match finishes 0-0, Morocco will qualify. Of course, DR Congo could help book their own spot if they can beat Morocco in Casablanca as they're looking to feature for the first time since 1974. Yet having won just one of their last five on the road, there is naturally cause for concern heading into the second leg.

Morocco: No notable injuries, illness, or suspensions for the hosts.

DR Congo: Glody Ngonda will miss this game due to a ban.

Tunisia vs Mali - kick off at 12:30 PST/15:30 EST/20:30 BST/21:30 CET

What happened in the first leg: Mali were rather unfortunate to lose the first leg 1-0 due to an own goal, and that could ultimately end up being their undoing - unless if they can turn things around against Tunisia on the road.

How Tunisia or Mali could qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup: Tunisia are in the driver's seat thanks to their narrow win, and thus don't need to do anything to qualify - except not to lose. Mali, meanwhile, will need to win this match by at least two goals if they want to make what would be their first ever appearance at a World Cup.

Tunisia team news: No injury, illness, or suspension concerns for the hosts.

Mali team news: Moussa Sissako is out after a bad evening that saw him score an own goal and be sent off, so the defender will miss this game due to a suspension.
