The Portuguese top-tier category returns to action with a batch of interesting games to keep an eye on. Get to know which ones with our guide.

The 2021-22 Primeira Liga season continues this weekend with a host of matches that could very well be some of the most entertaining in the campaign.

Things will kick off with a bang, as Braga and Benfica lock horns this Friday. Both teams are among the top five, and while there is a major points gap between them, the game between the red and white sides will be fun to watch.

One more thing to keep an eye on for Primeira Liga fans will be to see if Porto can carry on with their unbeaten streak, which has now extended for twenty-seven matches. The team led by Sergio Conceicao will put an end to this matchday when they welcome the enigmatic Santa Clara, a team that will enter the Do Dragao stadium on a five-game streak without a loss, although four of those matches have ended in draws.

Once we've dealt with two of the most popular teams in the league, it's time to focus on Sporting's match against Pacos de Ferreira. Time is running out for the Lions to catch up with Porto, and a loss here would not only be surprising for their fans, it could also hand them a devastating blow in their attempt to win back-to-back titles.

Having discussed the top matches of the week, let's have a closer look at the general status of the competition ahead of this busy weekend.

Primeira Liga standings ahead of Matchday 28

Porto continue their unbeaten run after 27 matches, but a loss combined with a win by Sporting could set fire to the title race. As for Sporting, the defending champions also have a six-point advantage over Benfica, who will kick things off in the weekend with their clash against Braga, who might get one of their final chances to get closer to the third spot. Gil Vicente will be waiting for any slip up by Braga to try and catch up with them in fourth place.
