The Lionesses secured their first ever European Championship triumph with a hard-fought victory over Germany.

The 2022 edition of the UEFA Women's European Championship came to an exciting conclusion on Sunday night as England beat Germany to secure their first-ever title at the tournament. The hard-fought encounter finished with the host nation securing a 2-1 win at Wembley Stadium, thanks to Chloe Kelly's extra-time winner.

It was a night where the substitutes of the Lionesses' largely repaid Sarah Wiegman's faith in them with efficiency. Following a goalless first half, Ella Toone broke the deadlock with a brilliantly executed chip before Germany equalized through Lina Magull moments later. The game was decided in extra-time when Chloe Kelly scrambled home the winner for the three-time finalists to be crowned as champions.

Throughout the campaign, a few stars have shone on the biggest stage in Europe and were duly rewarded for their stewardship following Sunday's curtain-drawer. England forward Beth Mead was named the UEFA Women's EURO 2022 Player of the Tournament. With her six goals and five assists, the 27-year-old forward also secured the Golden Boot and the Playmaker of the Tournament gong. Germany midfielder Lena Oberdorf was also named the UEFA Women's EURO 2022 Young Player of the Tournament.

While the buzz from winning the final will live on in the camp of England for the forseeable future, both sides did enough to grab a number of key statistics and records. Below are the most notable among the lot after Sunday's final:

  • Sarina Wiegman has won all 12 of her matches in charge at the UEFA Women's European Championship, with her sides scoring 35 goals and conceding just five in the process.

  • Germany have featured in 69% of the UEFA Women's European Championship finals (9/13), but this is the first time they have lost.

  • For the first time ever, Germany have lost two games against England in a row. In their 26 matchups before, England had won only once (D4 L21).

  • England have won the UEFA Women's European Championship for the first time, becoming the fifth different nation to win the competition after Sweden, Germany, Norway and Netherlands.

  • England scored 22 goals at the 2022 UEFA Women's European Championship, a record by a team in a single edition of the UEFA European Championship (men's and women's).

  • The clash between England and Germany was the first UEFA Women's European Championship final to go into extra time since the 2001 final, when the Germans went on to beat Sweden 1-0.
