Salah sets EPL records in opener vs Fulham

Salah sets numerous Premier League records after rescuing Liverpool a point in 2-2 Fulham draw

August 6, 2022 By Ali M.
The Reds attacker got on the scoresheet at Craven Cottage in Liverpool's opening game of the new Premier League season, setting several milestones along the way.

Liverpool kicked off their 2022/23 campaign with Saturday's early fixture as the Merseyside giants traveled to Fulham for their opening game of the new season.

But despite beating Manchester City 3-1 to win the Community Shield, Jurgen Klopp's men were met with a tough test at Craven Cottage as the newly-promoted London side nearly came away with a win against the FA Cup holders.

From the first whistle, the Reds struggled against Marco Silva's men, with Aleksandar Mitrovic giving his side a first-half lead after leaping above Trent Alexander-Arnold to head the ball past Alisson after half-an-hour of play. The Serbian striker, who was awarded Man of the Match, went on to get a brace, scoring a penalty in the second-half after being fouled by Virgil van Dijk in the box.

In fact, it looked like Liverpool were headed for an opening day defeat at one point. However, when you have Mohamed Salah in your lineup, you will always have hope. The Egyptian superstar came to his team's rescue once more, setting up the first of two equalizers, which was netted by Darwin Nunez just after the hour mark, while scoring the other.

Salah's 81st-minute goal not only rescued the visitors a point, but it also saw him set several records, both in the Premier League and at his club. First of all, this was the sixth straight season in which the former Roma ace scored in the opening game of the campaign, extending the record he set last year at five.

Additionally, the 30-year-old has equaled the record for most goals scored in the opening weekend of a new Premier League season, which is eight, joining a who's who list of English top-flight icons such as Alan Shearer, Frank Lampard, and Wayne Rooney.

And finally, Salah equaled Michael Owen's all-time goalscoring record for Liverpool across all competitions while overtaking the Englishman's tally in the Premier League alone despite playing fewer games so far. In terms of the English top-flight, Mohamed is now only two goals away from leapfrogging Steven Gerrard and is only 10 away from becoming the club's all-time top scorer in the league.

But has overtaken his Premier League goalscoring numbers
