The Manchester United center-back has secured a loan move to the Ligue 1 outfit for the remainder of the season.

Eric Bailly has secured completed a switch to French side Marseille on loan, a statement by Manchester United has confirmed. The 28-year-old Ivorian center-back will spend the remainder of the season at the club with the potential to make his move a permanent one.

Despite rapidly rising to become a fan favorite after arriving at Manchester from Villarreal in 2016, Bailly could not establish himself as a reliable center-back option for the Red Devils. The Ivorian defender's stint at Old Trafford was largely characterized by recurring spells on the sidelines with injury, making it difficult for him to nail down a regular spot in the side. The appointment of new boss Erik ten Hag has also resulted in the 28-year-old falling behind Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof in the pecking order, hence the decision to move him on.

Earlier this summer, AS Roma and Newcastle United were speculated to be interested in securing the service of Bailly. However, the player is now set for a debut at Marseille after the two clubs failed to make their interest concrete. A statement issued by Manchester United reads as follows: "Manchester United defender Eric Bailly has joined French side Marseille on loan for the remainder of the 2022/23 season.

"Bailly's move to the south of France includes the possibility of a permanent transfer at the end of the season."

The Ivorian departs Manchester United with 113 appearances under his belt. He won we won the Europa League, EFL Cup and Community Shield during his spell at the club.
