About Women's Super League

The FA Women's Super League (the FA WSL for short) is the highest league for women's association football clubs in Egland. Founded in 2010, it is run by the Football Association and replaced the FA Women's Premier League as the top-flight women's league in England.

During its inaugural edition of the league won by Arsenal Women, eight teams contested for the trophy. This was followed by a reform - the creation of FA WSL 1 and FA WSL 2 divisions in 2014. The introduction of the two divisions paved way for the implementation of the promotion and relegation system and, in 2018, FA WSL 2 was rebranded to what is now known as the FA Women's Championship. The league remains the second division for women's football in England.

12 women's association football clubs participate in the FA WSL. The league champions and runners-up earn automatic qualification for the subsequent season's UEFA Women's Champions League while the bottom-ranked club is relegated to the FA Women's Championship. Relatively, the winner of the second division league is promoted to the FA WSL, subject to meeting license criteria.
