About Greek Cup
The Greek Cup is the domestic football cup competition run in Greece by the Hellenic Football Federation. The tournament began back in 1931, with the inaugural title being won by AEK. Back in its early years, two-legged matches had not been introduced, nor were draws, with the football association choosing who would face who.
This tournament has undergone several changes since its inception. Until 1964, if the game remained a draw even after extra-time, the match would be replayed as there were no penalty shootouts. This changed in 1965, with fixtures being decided by the toss of a coin if the scoreline remained even after 120 minutes. Shortly afterward, penalty shootouts were introduced as the final tie-breaker.
The format of the Greek Cup has evolved over the seasons as well. In 2017/18 and several campaigns before that, the preliminary round was followed by a group stage with teams being split into groups of four. Each club faced every other side once and the top two progressed to the knockout stage. In 2018/19, the group stage was preceded by three full rounds while in 2019/20, that group stage was scrapped in favor of a fourth and fifth round.
