The Liga de Expansión MX, also known as Liga de Desarrollo, is the second-highest category of football in Mexico. This competition was founded in 2020, replacing Ascenso MX as the nation’s second division 26 years after its inception. 2020-21 was chosen as the inaugural campaign.

While the presentation of the league occurred on June 26, 2020; its origin can be traced to a meeting held four months earlier on February 20 between the presidents of the Liga MX clubs, the Ascenso MX clubs, and Mexican Football Federation. The goal behind this discussion was to strengthen the country’s top two championships.

The Liga de Expansión MX came to be as part of the "Stabilization Project", with the aim being to solve the financial struggles that plagued clubs in the Ascenso MX. The FMF wanted to avoid the disappearance of the second division, thus giving rise to this tournament.

This league operates as Liga MX, with two tournaments being played each season: the Apertura and the Clausura. As is true with the top flight, this championship enters a playoff stage once the regular season for each tournament wraps up. The team that finishes first advances to the semi-final of the Liguilla while the runner-up makes the quarter-final. The clubs that come in 3rd-12th enter the Repechage.

While the Liga de Expansión MX functions on a promotion-relegation system with Liga MX and the Segunda División (the third division), the organizers decided to suspend both promotion and relegation for the first three years.
