About Superettan

Superettan is the Swedish second division men’s league, sitting behind the nation’s top-flight tournament Allsvenskan but lying ahead of Division 1, the third-tier league. The competition began in 2000 and is held annually from April to October.

The league is contested by a total of 16 clubs and is a double round-robin tournament, meaning each team faces the other 15 twice a season – once at home and once away. A single Superettan campaign thus consists of 30 Matchdays, with the first-placed team at the end of the season being crowned the champions.

Superettan boasts a promotion/relegation system. Once the campaign ends, the top two teams in the league get promoted to Allsvenskan while the bottom two teams get relegated to Division 1. The third and fourth lowest teams in the league enter a relegation playoff against the two runners-up from Division 1 (Sweden’s third-tier league is comprised of two separate divisions: Norra and Södra). Additionally, the third-highest team in Superettan enters a playoff against the third lowest team in Allsvenskan for a spot in the top flight.
