Liverpool take on Manchester City on Monday night as both teams conclude the second match-day of the English Premier League. Ahead of the clash, Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson expressed himself concerning Manchester City’s huge spending during the transfer window.

Manager Roy Hodgson at a Liverpool press conference. The former Fulham manager believes that Sky Blues coach, Roberto Mancini, is now under pressure to help his club deliver titles. Approximately £122m has gone out of Manchester City’s pocket since the start of the 2010 summer transfer window and Coach Roy Hodgson gave his thoughts over Manchester City’s team as he told the Mirror:

“If you look at their squad of players and the amount that they’ve spent, then everybody sees them as a very strong squad with a very good chance of winning the league. I’m sure that they’ll be devastated if they don’t finish in the top three and qualify for the Champions League, because the owners have spent so much money.”

Manchester City Boss Roberto Mancini reacting with disappointment.

Well, since their competitive season kicked off, Roberto Mancini’s boys managed to found the net only once; that was when they defeated Romania’s Timisoara 1-0 thanks to Mario Balotelli’s solitary goal. The Sky Blues picked up a single point from their 0-0 draw away to Tottenham Hotspur on the first match-day of the English Premier League.

Manchester City and Liverpool are both in the same situation so far, as they both played out a draw on the opening day of the season. The difference there is that Liverpool are experiencing delicate issues when it comes to money whereas Manchester City have attracted a lot of expectations based on the enormous amount of cash they’ve splashed to buy players.

“It puts the manager [Roberto Mancini] under pressure as he has to make the players gel. That’s always the same thing at a new club. We’re in the same situation, except that we don’t have much money. In fact, we haven’t spent any.”

So Manchester City need to improve quickly and transform their home ground into a fortress as they aim to seriously challenge for the title. Can they snatch away all three points from Liverpool at the City of Manchester Stadium tonight?
