The 2015 FIFA under-20 World Cup has reached its climax. Brazil and Serbia will fight it out for the prestigous prize and the title of the best under-20 team in the world when they lock horns in the final, on Saturday, at Auckland's North Harbour Stadium.
However, before the trophy can be handed out, there is the issue the third spot play off, which will be fought over by two of Africa’s heavyweights: Senegal and Mali.
After an impressive, yet unexpected run, both sides had a good chance of making the final, but only Mali came achingly close, losing 2-1 to Serbia in extra time in the semis.
Senegal, on the other hand, were trashed 5-0 by Brazil in the last 4 but are now hoping to grab third place finish in the tournament in New Zealand.
Senegal coach Joseph Koto opened up about his side hopes of winning the under-20 World Cup, but admitted his side sole goal at the moment is to beat Mali, saying: “We went into this competition with one goal in mind: to reach the final. God has decided it was not to be. We are left with one final match to play, one that is very important in our eyes, and we will be doing our utmost to beat our brothers.”
Mali boss Fanyeri Diarra, despite stating his men will go all out for the bronze medal, claimed he was just happy to see two African nations reach this far in the tournament.
“We have put in a fantastic performance and the adventure is not over yet. There is still a bronze medal to play for and I think it’s wonderful that two African countries are contesting it.”
The two teams will face off this weekend on Saturday.
