The Barca superstar will go toe-to-toe with team-mate Neymar and rival Cristiano Ronaldo in next year’s gala.

Many pundits feel Liga BBVA top-scorer Neymar will put up a stiff competition in this year’s Ballon, while others are yet to write off Cristiano Ronaldo’s chances.

However, none of this matters to Dani Alves, who tips Lionel Messi to scoop up the award with “a big advantage”.

The Argentine superstar enjoyed a wonderful 2014-15 campaign, in which his exploits in front of goal saw him lead the Blaugrana to the treble, whilst also guiding his national side to a runners-up spot in the 2015 Copa America.

This season began with a bang for the 28-year-old, as his brace against Sevilla helped the Catalan giants lift the UEFA Super Cup, and though injury interrupted his campaign, the four-time Ballon d’Or recipient is back in full action, with 3 goals in 3 games to his name already since his return from injury.

"I see Messi winning his fifth Golden Ball – and with a big advantage," said the Selecao defender.

"He is far ahead of everyone, particularly in the influence he has on the team. The best players in the world do not have to be individualistic.

"Our team was strong before Messi's injury but he has come back and proven to be competitive far beyond the other players on the pitch."

The Champions League holders, due to face off with Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday, lead the Spanish Primera Division standings, yet the Brazilian full-back feels the Camp Nou side can improve further following Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Valencia.

"We are competing well and we are in a sweet moment. But like [Barcelona coach] Luis Enrique says, we can always improve.

"Harder games will come."
