Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez is set to miss up to 10 days of action after he suffered a calf injury in his side’s 2-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao in La Liga on Sunday.
Barcelona have already temporarily lost their first-choice goalkeeper Victor Valdes subsequent to a knee damage, which makes him a serious doubt for the club’s return-leg battle against Arsenal at the Camp Nou early in March. Now, Xavi is the latest addition on Barca’s injury list, and this is nothing but bad news to Coach Pep Guardiola.

Xavi played a major role in the Catalans’ game over the weekend, as he was involved in the building of his team’s 2 goals in the match. It is however reported that he felt some pain in his left leg towards the end of the encounter, which was diagnosed as a slight calf strain by doctors.

He has been recommended 10 days of inactivity so as to give his internal wound some time to recover; but this will cost him his presence in Barcelona’s matches against Mallorca this weekend and, possibly, his presence against Valencia on March 2. The defending Spanish champions now have to face a huge health problem, since the 31-year-old’s injury comes after the withdrawal of Captain Carlos Puyol, Victor Valdes, and Dani Alves—who is unable to perform next to a suspension.

Things are anticipated to be in better shapes by the time of the club’s next clash in the Champions League; but until then, getting the right results to stay on top of La Liga will be a matter of delicacy requiring the manager’s firm control over the situation. With this in mind, dimly waiting for the return of the missing stars is definitely not an option for the available players at Barcelona.
