Legendary goalkeeper Iker Casillas has been hospitalized after suffering a heart attack during training. This happened during a session on Wednesday with his Portuguese club, with the 37-year-old being rushed to the hospital.
Portuguese radio station RTP first reported this story, revealing that the Spanish icon suffered a myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack. This occurred at the Olival training facility, where the custodian was preparing for the Dragons' weekend league clash with Aves.
The former Real Madrid man was quickly taken to hospital and was immediately treated and is thus no longer in danger. However, he remains in hospital and will probably not feature again this season for his Primeira Liga side.
Porto later confirmed the report via an official statement, stating that the Spaniard is in stable condition. "The work session [on Wednesday] was promptly interrupted so that assistance could be given to the FC Porto goalkeeper, who is at this moment at the CUP Porto Hospital. Casillas is fine, stable and with his cardiac problem resolved," their statement read.
Iker is regarded as one of the greatest shot-stoppers to have graced the game, enjoying tremendous success at Real Madrid. It was with Los Blancos where he won three Champions League titles and five Spanish top-flight crowns.
He holds quite a number of records with the Spanish national team, being their most-capped player in history. He's also the first and only captain of La Roja Furia to lift the World Cup, doing so in South Africa back in 2010 after beating Netherlands 1-0 in the final.
It didn't take long for messages of support to pour in, with fellow goalkeepers, clubs, and even the Spanish Primera Division. Check out the tweets below.
