The PSG superstar surpassed O Fenômeno to become Brazil's second all-time top scorer but made sure to praise the iconic no.9.

Tuesday saw Brazil take on Peru in yet another World Cup qualifier for Qatar 2022. What transpired was a memorable game for their talisman attacker Neymar, scoring a hat-trick en route to a 4-2 victory.

The Selecao began their campaign with a 5-0 victory over Bolivia on Matchday 2 and in the following round, Tite's men traveled to Estadio Nacional del Perú. Despite going down twice, the Copa America champions fought back, with Neymar securing the first of their two equalizers before giving them the lead in the 83rd minute. The PSG superstar would go on to complete his three-goal haul, netting past Gallese four minutes into added time to maintain his nation's perfect start.

The 28-year-old's heroics saw him reach an excellent feat as his hat-trick took him second in Brazil's list of all-time leading scorers. The former Santos sensation is on 64 goals, overtaking the iconic Ronaldo (62) and now trails only the legendary Pele (77). Given that he is only 13 strikes away from the all-time record, Neymar could soon write his name in the history books.

Having overtaken Ronaldo, the winger made sure to pay tribute to O Fenômeno, both on the pitch and off it. First, Neymar did the retired striker's finger-wagging celebration which many Brazilians grew to love. After the game ended, the 28-year-old took to social media to praise the former Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid goalscoring machine, writing on Twitter: "All my respect for you FENÔMENO".

Neymar will now have his eyes on Pele's all-time record. As for now, the focus shifts away from international duty back to PSG as Brazil have played their final game of this break. The Parisiens ace is expected to join up with his club as they prepare for their Ligue 1 clash with Nimes on Friday.
