The Polish striker was undoubtedly the best footballer in a complicated year, but the difference between him and the second place is not as larger as you woul expect.

Robert Lewandowski's first The Best Award capped one massive season for the footballer, and most of his peers acknowledged his form throughout the year.

That is why the footballer claimed a massive lead over Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi when all ballots were counted to determine the winner, but there was one category where Lewa's dominance was not as impressive as you could imagine.

The points system established by FIFA saw Lewandowski claim the award with 52 points. Cristiano became the first runner-up with 38 points, and surprisingly, Lionel Messi's dip in form saw him drop to third place after winning the trophy in 2019. This year, Messi earned only 35 points.

Speaking about who voted for whom, neither Messi nor Lewandowski voted for Cristiano Ronaldo. Surprisingly, CR7 did vote for his two opponents, giving Lewandowski top honors and giving Messi three points in second place. His third vote went to Kylian Mbappé.

Messi, on the other hand, voted for Neymar as the best player of the year, followed by Mbappé in second and Lewandowski in third. This evening's winner snubbed both of his rivals on his ballot, giving Thiago Alcántara the nod as the best player of the year, followed by Neymar and Kevin De Bruyne in third.
