The 2023/24 Serie A season has finally gotten underway as 20 teams all hope to achieve their various objectives this term. For some, like Napoli, their goal is simple: to successfully retain their Scudetto crown after winning it for the first time in 33 years last campaign. For others, like Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter, they all will hope to challenge the Partenopei for the coveted prize, while Jose Mourinho's Roma will also hope to have their say in the conversation.
Matchday one saw mixed results for Italy's top clubs. Reigning Scudetto champs Napoli picked up a comfortable 3-1 win over Frosinone, but Roma were held to a shock 2-2 draw against Salernitana at home. Meanwhile, Inter earned a solid 2-0 victory against Monza thanks to a Lautaro Martinez brace, while AC Milan also got off to a great start with new signing Christian Pulisic scoring and assisting during a 2-0 road win over Bologna. Finally, Juventus, who have been banned from European competition, eased to a straight-forward 3-0 win over Lecce to ensure they keep pace with Napoli, Milan, and Inter at the top of the Serie A table.

Serie A matchday 2 - Top games to watch
Here are some of the key games taking place on matchday two:
Hellas Verona vs Roma: Roma will be looking to pick up their first win of the season after a surprising 2-2 draw against Salernitana. Were it not for Andrea Belotti's brace, Jose Mourinho's side would have started off the season on a rather foul note. As such, the Giallorossi, will naturally aim to nab all three points against Hellas Verona, who despite winning their season opener 1-0 over Empoli, have historically struggled against Roma, with just two wins in their last 22 meetings with the Lupi across all comps.
AC Milan vs Torino: Milan got off to a great start, with goals from Olivier Giroud and new signing Christian Pulisic to give them a 2-0 road win over Bologna on matchday one. Now, the Rossoneri, who had an impressive run in the Champions League last season, will look to make it two wins in two when they welcome Torino for their first home Serie A match of the 2023/24 season. Torino, for their part, failed to make much of an impact as they were held to a frustrating scoreless stalemate against Cagliari, and given the fact that the Granata have won just three of their last 35 meetings against the Rossoneri, the visitors could be in for a tough test this weekend.
Juventus vs Bologna: Despite their off the pitch woes that have seen them banned from European competition, Juventus have started the new season on the right footing following a comfortable 3-0 win over Udinese. The Bianconeri will now take on a Bologna side who were beaten 2-0 by Milan on matchday one and given that they are unbeaten in their last 24 meetings with the Rossoblu across all comps, Massimiliano Allegri's team will certainly fancy their chances to make it two wins from their opening two Serie A ties.
Napoli vs Sassuolo: For the first time in over three decades, Napoli come into a new Serie A season as the reigning champions of Italy. Although Scudetto-winning coach Luciano Spalletti is no longer with the club and has now been replaced by Rudi Garcia, the Partenopei still have been able to hang on to several of their key players, including Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Osimhen, who won the Capocannoniere last season, has already opened his account, with his brace playing a big part in Napoli's 3-1 win over Frosinone last weekend. Although upcoming opponents Sassuolo have proven to be a nuisance for many of Italy's big sides in the past, the Neroverdi will come into this game having lost 2-0 to Atalanta and have won just one of their last seven trips to Napoli's home ground.
Cagliari vs Inter: Inter's run to the Champions League finals last season will be something many Nerazzurri fans won't forget anytime soon, and now, they will be hoping to make another deep run this time around. For the moment, though, Simone Inzaghi's men will be focused on picking up as many points in the league as possible, and they have started off well following a 2-0 comfortable win over Monza last weekend. Next up for Inter is an away game against a newly promoted Cagliari side who marked their return to the top flight with a 0-0 draw against Torino.
