Preview

The 2023-24 UEFA Champions League season is finally here, with this highly-anticipated campaign kicking off on Tuesday, September 19. And to make things even better, one of the standout games will take place on the first day of Matchday 1, with PSG hosting Dortmund at the Parc des Prince in a 3 p.m. ET showdown.

For the first time in several seasons, PSG are no longer seen as one of the favorites for the UEFA Champions League title. The French giants have a new head coach in the dugout, but with the departures of Lionel Messi and Neymar, the consensus is that the PSG experiment has failed.

Only Kylian Mbappe remains at the Parc des Princes from that star-studded — but dysfunctional — front three, yet even the Frenchman wants out as he looks destined to leave next summer for Real Madrid for free.

The Ligue 1 champions let go of several players, not only Messi and Neymar, who left for Inter Miami and Al Hilal respectively, and have recruited Ousmane Dembele, Randal Kolo Muani, Goncalo Ramos, and Marco Asensio. However, things have not been going well so far.

Luis Enrique's side have failed to win all but two of their opening five games of the season and they enter this Champions League match on the back of a disappointing defeat at home to Nice, with Mbappe's brace unable to salvage a point in that 3-2 loss on Friday.

Given that Les Parisiens are in the Group of Death alongside Dortmund, Newcastle, and AC Milan, many have begun wondering whether Mbappe and Co. will make it out of the group stage. Victory over BVB in the opening game could quell those fears but the club's recent results show that that won't be easy to achieve.

It should be noted that PSG are not the only club reeling from the departure of a superstar. This will be Dortmund's first UEFA Champions League game since the sale of Jude Bellingham, with the English sensation having left for Real Madrid over the summer.

The Three Lions ace has begun life at the Bernabeu superbly, showing what a talent BVB had at their disposal. In his absence, the German giants have not started the season well.

Edin Terzić's side are unbeaten so far this season in the Bundesliga but have drawn in half of their opening four games. While the season is still early, they already find themselves behind Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen, dubbed as one of the most exciting teams to watch in Europe this term.

Furthermore, question marks linger over die Schwarzgelben and whether they can recover from last season's heartbreak, having lost the Bundesliga title to Bayern Munich on the final day after failing to beat Mainz.

Following this disaster, Marco Reus stepped down as captain, with Emre Can picking up the armband as a result. Nonetheless, Dortmund enjoyed a lovely 4-2 comeback victory over Freiburg in their most recent outing, with Hummels surprisingly scoring a brace, and will be looking to muster a winning streak when they step out on the Parc des Princes pitch.

Team news

PSG: Marco Asensio is unfortunately unavailable due to a foot injury. Meanwhile, Fabian Ruiz, Nordi Mukiele, and Nuno Mendes are also unavailable. Lee Kang-in and Presnel Kimpembe are also sidelined but fortunately, Marquinhos and Manuel Ugarte are expected to return to the lineup after sitting out the defeat to Nice due to their late return from South America's World Cup qualifiers.

Dortmund: Thomas Meunier and Mateu Morey are sidelined with hamstring and knee injuries, respectively. Gio Reyna could return to the squad for this game but question marks linger over Julien Duranville due to his fitness. On a positive note, Gregor Kobel, Niclas Fullkrug, and Julian Ryerson should all be available for selection.

Key stats

  • These two clubs have only met once before in the UEFA Champions League and that was in the 2019-20 round of 16.

  • Both teams won at home but the Ligue 1 giants prevailed on aggregate, triumphing 3-2.

  • BVB have locked horns with French clubs in this competition 14 times before, winning eight and losing six.

  • Unfortunately, Terzic's side are yet to keep a clean sheet away from home this campaign.
