Preview

The 2023-24 UEFA Champions League has kicked off, with last season's runners-up Inter Milan getting their campaign underway on Wednesday. The Italian giants will want to go a step further this time around but must focus on beating their first opponents Real Sociedad.

The Spanish side will be the hosts for this tie as they aim to mark their return to Europe's premier club competition with a win. It has been 10 years since Real Sociedad last featured in the UEFA Champions League, having last qualified for the 2013-14 edition.

La Real did not make it out of the group stage, finishing bottom of the table behind Manchester United, Leverkusen, and Shakhtar Donetsk, which means their campaign ended in 2013 that season.

Last season's fourth-placed finish in La Liga helped Imanol Alguacil's side end their wait but the goal will be to make it out of the group stage this time around. However, this will not be easy as the Spanish club will have to overcome Italian, Portuguese, and Austrian giants Inter, Benfica, and RB Salzburg.

Unfortunately, things have not begun well for Real Sociedad. While there have been a few positive notes, namely Takefusa Kubo's start to the season, form has not been on their side, with La Real winning only one of their opening five games. In fact, they head into this tie on the back of a 2-1 loss to Real Madrid and will need to bounce back against the Italians.

Inter Milan, on the other hand, enter this game on the back of the best result possible. The Italian giants locked horns with bitter rivals AC Milan over the weekend in the latest edition of the Milan Derby, with the Nerazzurri handing their neighbors a thorough beating.

Inzaghi's men, who have begun the season exceptionally well, beat the Rossoneri by a historic 5-1 scoreline, with Mkhitaryan getting a brace while Thuram, Çalhanoğlu, and Frattesi made it onto the scoresheet.

This means last season's Champions League runners-up are yet to drop points this season, winning all four of their opening Serie A fixtures. However, while Lautaro Martinez and Co. are seen as the favorites for the Scudetto, their goal is to challenge in Europe as well.

Last season saw the Nerazzurri reach the UEFA Champions League final for the first time since Jose Mourinho guided them to the treble. While Inzaghi's men put up an admirable performance against Manchester City, Inter lost 1-0 and watched Haaland and Co. lift the title.

Nonetheless, despite losing Marcelo Brozovic, Edin Dzeko, and Andre Onana over the summer, the Milan giants have come back stronger and will be looking to win their group ahead of Benfica, Real Sociedad, and RB Salzburg.

Team news

Real Sociedad: Carlos Fernandez is suspended for this game while Andre Silva and Martin Merquelanz are injured. Mikel Oyarzabal should join the high-flying Kubo in attack while the highly-rated Martin Zubimendi should get his first taste of UEFA Champions League football at the heart of La Real's midfield.

Inter Milan: The visitors have no major concerns. Thuram and Martinez are expected to lead the line while Pavard, De Vrij, and Bastoni should start in defense.

Key stats
