David Trezeguet scores on his River Plate debut to help the Argentine giants beat Racing Club to obtain the Copa Cuidad de Mar del Plata.
French striker David Trezeguet was on target in his River Plate debut to help Los Millonarios defeat Racing Club 2-1 to lift the Copa Cuidad de Mar del Plata at the Jose Maria Minella stadium on Thursday.

River started the game in the best possible manner, as with just six minutes gone they went ahead when Rogelio Funes Mori bursted into the area and beat Racing goalkeeper Sebastian Saja with a superb lobbed effort.

Racing appeared to be shell-shocked after conceding the goal, and a pumped River would have capitalised on this if Saja hadn't kept out goal-bound efforts from Lucas Ocampos and Alejandro Dominguez.

While River looked very strong in all aspects, Racing couldn't find their feet, and only troubled Daniel Vega through individual efforts from lanky Colombian attacker Giovanni Moreno.

River striker Fernando Cavenaghi should have doubled his team's advantage towards the end of the half, but quite incredibly he failed to beat Saja when he had the goal at his mercy.

After the restart, River lowered the intensity of the game a touch, and Racing had more of the ball, but although they grew on the field the closest they came to scoring was through a relatively tame free-kick from Moreno.

In the 23rd minute of the half former Juventus striker David Trezeguet entered the field, and he marked his return to Argentine soccer in grand style, as only 16 minutes from making his River debut he found the back of the net with a clinical finish.

The French 1998 World Cup winner received a crisp pass from Uruguayan midfielder Carlos Sanchez, before striding into the area and beating Saja with a crossed shot that went in off the right post.

Two minutes later Colombian goal-poacher Teofilo Gutierrez scored a consolation goal for Racing, when he fired home a penalty kick.

River Plate won their first title of the Summer, and will be hoping to continue with their winning ways when they take on arch-rivals Boca Juniors next Wednesday.
