The Spanish league continues this weekend with these popular clubs still aiming to reach the top of the competition. Follow their games with this guide.

We are well into the second half of the 2023-24 season in La Liga, and curiously enough, neither of their top teams hold the top spot in the competition.

Girona's amazing run in the tournament has seen the red and white side claiming first place in La Liga, but Real Madrid are only one point behind them, an advantage that could be erased this week.

On the other hand, Barcelona are eight points behind Girona, and with their early exit from the Copa del Rey and the humiliating loss to Real Madrid in the Supercopa, the Blaugrana club needs to step it up to avoid more pressure against their coach. Keeping up with the leaders is a must for Xavi's men, and playing at "home" this week could help them do exactly that.

Before we go deeper into each of these games, let us have a look at the league table.

The game between La Unión and Los Merengues will represent a big challenge for the hosts and a tricky fixture for Los Merengues. The home team is currently ranked eighth, but they have failed to beat Real Madrid in over 20 years. While they have come up with decent performances against La Liga heavyweights this season, Las Palmas have failed to score a single goal against Real Madrid in their most recent three matches, while Los Merengues have found the back of the net eight times. Speaking of games where Real Madrid has played away against Las Palmas, Los Blancos have collected three wins in their last five, with the last one of those taking place in 2018 thanks to a brace by Gareth Bale and one more by Benzema. Last week saw both teams winning their matches, although Real Madrid's win was more controversial.

Barcelona vs Villarreal

Barcelona are going through difficult times this week, and most rumors are aimed at coach Xavi Hernández's future with the club if he can't come up with decent performances by his men. With that in mind, Els Culers will look for a fourth consecutive win against Villarreal, who have only beaten the Catalan side once in their last ten matches. To give a bit of hope to the Yellow Submarine's fans, their most recent win against Barcelona came when they were playing away from home in the 2021-22 season, but to claim a similar result, the club and their coach will have to forget about their past meetings against the Blaugrana, since boss Marcelino García has only won three of his 28 meetings against the home team.
