About

ITV 4 UK History, Coverage, Features

The Independent Television service, or ITV, is a free-to-air channel owned by STV. It was originally conformed by three different regions (London, the Midlands and the North of England), but now operates as one feed. ITV is available to watch in England, southern Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands, along with other territories via satellite TV.

ITV 4 is a sister channel to ITV 1, which has continually been named as the most popular commercial television channel in the UK. It was launched on November 1, 2005 and has turned into a male-oriented channel due to its large content of sports, action movies, police shows, US drama programs, classic shows from the 60s and 70s over the years. ITV 4 replaced the ITV News Channel due to its low ratings.

The first sporting event covered by this channel was the UEFA Champions League match between Real Betis and Chelsea, which was followed up by the UKTV premiere of Kojak and the movie “Carlito’s way”, which make a point on the channel’s target demographics.

ITV 4’s thorough sports coverage over the years has included club football from La Liga, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, and a weekly highlights show for the Bundesliga. Furthermore, ITV 4 has also aired international games for the English National Team in events such as the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA European Qualifiers, and the UEFA Euro. National team coverage has also included African Cup of Nations games, international friendlies, and highlights shows from games that involved the other countries in the UK.

The channel’s massive football coverage has also been spiced up over the years with sports such as boxing, darts, tennis, snooker, wrestling, horse racing, motor sports, and cycling.

ITV 4 launched an HD feed on November 15, 2010. During its early years, it was only available via a pay subscription service, but it can now be found on the British free-to-air grid. ITV 4’s standard and high definition feeds are available on select pay-tv carriers in the UK and in other countries. Check local listings for further details.
